The self-indulgence is principally centred on Melina Mercouri, Dassin's wife at the time and a superb actress. The 1964 speed of action cannot compare with the 2020's, so it felt a little slow to me. Excellent 16.9 ratio, perfect picture, good sound and good Optional English subtitles, but the whole is placed in the middle of my screen, surrounded by black bars. If you haven't listened to Joe Dassin, I so recommend " L'ete Indien"; " Et is tu n'existais pas"... A voice made of honey. A motley crew of further accomplices make up their gang: Robert Morley as the Englishman who can help them disable the security system, the mute acrobat Giulio, and hapless petty crook Arthur Simpson played by a scene stealing Peter Ustinov, whose endearing performance was deservedly rewarded with a best supporting actor Oscar. The movie is very picturesque. Dans le quartier israélite de Betolan, le cimetière entouré d'un mur blanc et les hautes silhouettes des cocotiers contre le dur azur du ciel. An odd transfer. Marvelous escapism. One of my favorite French singers is Joe Dassin. Oh, well, a little birdie can spoil a robbery in this case. Mais c'est au cimetière israélite d' Hollywood que ses parents, le célèbre cinéaste Jules Still the location filming is good, some of the robbery is good, but the bottom line is that it seems Dassin doesn't find comedy to be that easy. Melina Mercouri is a fullblooded femme fatale and she teams up with an elegant Swiss gentleman burglar (Maximilian Schell) for a daring jewel heist in Istanbul's Topkapi palace. This movie is thrilling , funny and enjoyable to watch. What a lot of fun this film is. More plot holes than a string vest but enjoyable nonetheless. How ironic that as carefully planned and executed as the robbery is, the thieves get caught and put in prison.
I have yet to see an interesting, exciting heist movie and unfortunately, the 1964 Topkapi was a big disappointment.
